Basseterre, St. Kitts, March 29, 2023 (SKNIS): The St. Kitts Water Services Department (WSD) held its prize-giving ceremony on March 28 to recognize and celebrate the children who entered the Water Competition.
Minister of Public Infrastructure and Utilities, the Honourable Konris Maynard, thanked the team at the Water Services Department for the work they did during the week of activities in celebrating World Water Day.
“I want to take this opportunity to congratulate all of those who participated in this competition but the emphasis for us is to conserve water and use it sparingly and wisely,” he said.
He said that world leaders congregated at the United Nations for a conference on water because of the pressing issues regarding water on a global scale.
“This is why the team here at the Water Services Department decided to engage young people in helping us to spread the message of conservation,” Minister Maynard said.
“The reality is children are the most effective way to communicate information because you are going to take it as you get it and spread it around and so I want you (the children) today to not only be the champions who won the TikTok competition and the door decoration but I want you to become water champions,” he added.
“For many years we thought that we would have enough water but right now we are unable to provide 24hr service and that is because if we leave the water on for 24hrs, we will deplete our main source of water here in St. Kitts which is our aquifer,” said Minister Maynard.
For the door decoration competition, first place was awarded to the Ross Preparatory School with Beach Allen Primary School in second place and Dean Glasford Primary School in third place. For the TikTok competition, first place was awarded to Verchilds High School second place going to Washington Archibald High School, and third place was awarded to Charles E. Mills Secondary School.
