Basseterre, St. Kitts, June 28, 2023 (Cabinet Secretariat): The Cabinet Ministers met under the Chairmanship of Prime Minister, The Honourable Dr Terrance Drew, on Tuesday, June 27th, 2023, and made several important decisions to improve the welfare of our people.
Commissioner of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force, James Sutton, updated the Cabinet on the ongoing work of the Force. In particular, Commissioner Sutton shared that concerted efforts continue to be made to reduce violent crimes, especially gun-related violence. He noted that officers continue to conduct targeted patrols in known areas of concern and coordinate resources and intelligence across all national security services. In addition, Commissioner Sutton highlighted the combined efforts of the security forces who ensured the safe execution of the recently held St. Kitts Music Festival.
The Cabinet approved the extension of ‘No Plastic Bag Mondays’ initiative of the Ministry of Environment, Climate Action and Constituency Empowerment. This initiative has gained momentum with the public, local businesses, environmental groups and other civil society interest groups, over the last month. In keeping with the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party Administration’s thrust towards transforming St. Kitts and Nevis into a Sustainable Island State and reducing plastic waste and protecting the natural environment, the ‘No Plastic Bag Mondays’ initiative will continue until the implementation of a total ban on single-use plastics.
The Cabinet of Ministers congratulated the Honourable Marsha Henderson and her entire team and committee on the successful staging of the 25th Anniversary of the St. Kitts Music Festival. The three-day festival continues to receive glowing reviews across the Caribbean Region and internationally. Additionally, the Cabinet expresses tremendous congratulations to the St. Kitts and Nevis National Football Team aka ‘The Sugar Boyz’ for their remarkable feat when they qualified for the CONCACAF Gold Cup for the very first time in our nation’s history. The Cabinet also extends praise and commendations to our Special Olympics St. Kitts and Nevis athletes and coaches for their stellar performances during the 2023 Special Olympics World Games in Berlin. The Special Olympians will be returning to a hero’s welcome this week having won five (5) gold and four (4) bronze medals.
