Basseterre, Saint Kitts and Nevis, April 24, 2026 (SKNIS): The Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis has officially assumed the Presidency of the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the Escazú Agreement during its Fourth Meeting (COP4), held in The Bahamas from April 21-24, 2026.
This milestone marks a significant moment for Saint Kitts and Nevis, as it takes on a leadership role in advancing environmental democracy across Latin America and the Caribbean. The Escazú Agreement, the region’s first legally binding treaty on environmental matters, seeks to guarantee access to environmental information, public participation in decision-making, and justice in environmental issues.

In assuming the Presidency, Saint Kitts and Nevis reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening regional cooperation and promoting sustainable development, transparency, and inclusive governance. The Federation emphasised the importance of safeguarding environmental defenders, enhancing climate resilience, and ensuring that vulnerable communities have a voice in shaping environmental policy.
Speaking at COP4 of the Escazú Agreement, Director of Environment, Derrione Edmeade, underscored the urgency of collective action.
“As a Small Island Developing State on the frontlines of climate change, Saint Kitts and Nevis is deeply conscious that environmental protection is not optional; it is existential,” said Mr. Edmeade. “In assuming the Presidency of the Escazú Agreement, we commit to advancing transparency, strengthening public participation, and ensuring that every citizen has a voice in safeguarding our shared environment. Together, we must move from commitment to action, and from action to lasting impact for our people and our planet.”

As President of the COP, Saint Kitts and Nevis will guide the work of the Conference for the next two years, facilitating dialogue among Parties, promoting best practices, and advancing the implementation of the Agreement’s objectives.
The Government of Saint Kitts and Nevis expressed appreciation to the outgoing Presidency for its stewardship and commended the Government of The Bahamas for successfully hosting COP4.
