Basseterre, Saint Kitts, June 10, 2026 (PMO): Prime Minister and Minister of National Security, the Honourable Dr. Terrance Drew, today called on citizens to reflect on the courage, resilience and determination that preserved the Federation’s democracy during the events of June 10, 1967, as the nation commemorated the 59th anniversary of the historic date.
Speaking during a ceremony held in Basseterre, Prime Minister Drew reflected on the attempted overthrow of the democratically elected government led by the Federation’s first National Hero, the Right Excellent Sir Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw, describing June 10 as one of the most defining moments in the nation’s history.
“59 years ago, the 10th of June, 1967 this young nation woke to an attack on its very heart,” the Prime Minister said.
He recounted how individuals sought to destabilize the country and remove its elected leadership by force, including plans to target critical national infrastructure in an effort to topple the government.

However, Dr. Drew noted that those responsible underestimated both the resolve of the people and the determination of the security forces who stood in defence of democracy.
“But they were wrong. They underestimated us, they underestimated you, the members of our esteemed defense force. They ultimately underestimated the character and the resolve of our people.”
The Prime Minister said the failure of the plot demonstrated an enduring truth that continues to define St. Kitts and Nevis today.
“The plot failed. We held strong, and the lesson of that day has never left us, although small, we are not weak, and our strength and character are not defined by our size, but our will and our commitment to this great country.”
Dr. Drew emphasized that the significance of June 10 extends beyond history, serving as a reminder that every generation must remain committed to protecting the nation’s democratic institutions and preserving the freedoms secured by those who came before.
“The strength of our country is not measured in square miles. It is measured in the spine of the men and women who refuse to let it fall.”
Hon. Dr. Drew also paid tribute to the members of the St. Kitts-Nevis Defence Force, describing them as the modern-day custodians of that legacy and the living embodiment of the values that defeated the attempted coup nearly six decades ago.
Dr. Drew further urged citizens, particularly young people, to learn from the sacrifices of previous generations and to remain vigilant in protecting democracy, national unity and the rule of law, and stressed that June 10 must never be forgotten because it stands as a powerful reminder that the freedoms enjoyed today were preserved through courage, service and unwavering commitment to country.
