Basseterre, Saint Kitts, August 10, 2026 (SKNIS) – Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, the Honourable Dr. Geoffrey Hanley, has described the awarding of Taiwan scholarships to thirty-seven (37) nationals as a historic achievement and a significant investment in the future of the Federation.
The university scholarships were presented during a ceremony on Saturday, August 08, at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort. Twenty-eight (28) nationals received the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) Scholarships, while nine (9) were awarded the International Cooperation and Development Fund (ICDF) Scholarships.
Dr. Hanley revealed that the number could effectively have been 40 this year, noting that three additional ICDF recipients have had their scholarships deferred until 2027.
He expressed gratitude to the President and Government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) for increasing the number of scholarships available to nationals of Saint Kitts and Nevis and for exceeding the country’s request.
“Over the past 43 years, Taiwan has been supportive of our national development agenda,” Dr. Hanley said, pointing to Taiwan’s contributions not only to education, but also to healthcare, water and food security.
“Taiwan’s support has opened doors, built bridges, and created opportunities that have changed lives for many of our citizens,” he added.
The deputy prime minister reassured parents and families that their children would be well cared for while studying in Taiwan. He shared that his own son spent nine years there, returning home with a master’s degree, valuable knowledge and lasting friendships and memories.
He encouraged this year’s scholarship recipients to embrace the experience fully, reminding them that Taiwan offers more than academic opportunities.
“Taiwan is not just a place of learning; it is a place of warmth, safety, peace and growth,” he said.
Dr. Hanley urged the awardees to work hard, support one another, remain responsible and honest, and to represent their families, communities and country with dignity.
“You are not just students. You are ambassadors of Saint Kitts and Nevis.”
The 2026 cohort represents the largest number of Taiwan scholarship recipients in a single year from Saint Kitts and Nevis, underscoring the expanding educational opportunities available through the longstanding partnership.
